From Life to Death: Rwanda's Revival Fueled by LFTL

by Dan Kersten on August 25, 2025

The 1994 Genocide

When I visited Rwanda in January 2005, I saw firsthand how the pain caused by the 1994 genocide remained. More than 800,000 people were killed
in just 100 days. Afterwards, survivors were in shock. Few were interested in religion or God.

Yet history shows that even after such horrific evil torments and ravages a nation, the Holy Spirit often begins to move His people to accomplish His plan.

And from day one after the genocide, Light for the Lost funds began pouring into Rwanda and our missionaries began assisting a remnant of 12 Assemblies of God members to rebuild.

Above: Pastor Christine Gatabazi survived the genocide in 1994 and later helped her husband, Jean, lead the Rwanda Assemblies of God into rebuilding and revival. Today, Christine continues her ministry in leadership and teaching.

Above: Pastor Jean-Marie Mulinda also witnessed and survived the genocide and later became a Rwanda AG pastor. Today he leads the Bible schools in Kigali, the capital.

Rwanda Revived

Today, there are 179 Assemblies of God churches throughout Rwanda. They are led by Pastor Emanuel Ngabonziza (who was featured in this LFTL video).

In 1996, LFTL funds have frequently provided numerous forms of evangelistic materials to Rwanda, such as the FireBible, Discovery Series, and Living the Truth. Hundreds of believers in Rwandan AG churches were won to Christ because of these resources.

Light for the Lost funds have helped fuel Rwanda's revival by providing thousands of printed resources for Rwandan churches and pastors since 1994.

Pastor Emanuel Ngabonziza was in the Rwandan army during the 1994 genocide war. He helped liberate his country. After the war, he became a pastor and now leads the Rwanda AG as superintendent. He is featured in a powerful LFTL video found on our website.

More of THIS!

As we observe God’s handiwork in Rwanda—a country written off in 1994 as “dead”—we shake our heads in amazement and say to God, “Please, Lord, we want more of THIS. Do THIS in other nations, too!”

Thank you for partnering with LFTL in your giving so missionaries in other troubled parts of the world can introduce the life-giving gospel of Jesus to lost people everywhere. Click the image below to contribute.
